Mama Cacao: Heart Medicine, Memory, and Right Relationship
There is a reason cacao has never been just “chocolate.”
Long before it became a commodity, it was known, held, and honored as medicine. Not in a metaphorical sense, but as something living, something relational, and something that moves through the body, the heart, and the space between people.
Across Mesoamerican lineages (including the Maya and Aztec civilizations), cacao was understood as a bridge. It was a connective tissue between the human and the divine, the individual and the collective, the physical body and the unseen forces.
It was consumed during births, unions, grief rituals, and moments of transition because it helped people feel. Not in an overwhelming way, but in a way that brought things back into motion and alignment.
And that is how we use it still.
The Heart, Literally and Energetically
Cacao’s reputation as “heart medicine” is not symbolic alone…it is physiological.
Its compounds support circulation, gently increase heart rate, and relax blood vessels, allowing the body to soften rather than brace. The presence of theobromine creates a steady, grounded energy; not the sharp spike of caffeine, but something slower, more sustained. There is warmth. There is space.
At the same time, cacao interacts with the emotional body.
It supports the release of what has been held (grief, tension, unspoken feelings, etc.) by creating a state where the nervous system feels safe enough to open. Compounds like anandamide and phenylethylamine contribute to a sense of ease, connection, and subtle uplift. Not euphoria for the sake of escape, but a return to relational awareness.
This is why people often say cacao “opens the heart” ; what it actually does is create the conditions where the heart can speak without force.
Cacao as a Living Teacher
In many traditions, cacao is not treated as an object or a tool to be used. It is approached as a being (a spirit), often referred to as Mama Cacao as a plant teacher.
That language is not about romanticizing the plant. It reflects a worldview where medicine is relational, not extractive.
We do not take from cacao; we enter into right relationship with it.
This is also where decolonization becomes essential.
Much of what is now marketed as “cacao ceremony” has been removed from its cultural context, simplified, and repackaged for consumption. When that happens, the depth of the practice is often lost, along with the people who have carried it forward.
To work with cacao in a way that is actually aligned means asking different questions:
Where is this cacao sourced from?
Who grew it, harvested it, and prepared it?
Are those communities being supported, credited, and respected?
Am I approaching this as a trend, or as a relationship?
There is no way to separate the medicine from the people who have kept it alive.
Ceremonial vs. Commercial Cacao
Not all cacao holds the same integrity.
Ceremonial-grade cacao is minimally processed. It is typically stone-ground into a paste, with the natural fats intact, and without additives like dairy or refined sugar. This allows the full spectrum of compounds to remain present.
At Conscious Ceremonies, we work specifically with ceremonial-grade cacao in block form.
These blocks are made from whole cacao beans that have been carefully fermented, dried, and ground, then set into solid form without being stripped down or overly altered. When prepared, the cacao is shaved or chopped from the block and gently melted into water, allowing it to return to its original state.
This matters more than people realize.
Because the integrity of the cacao is still intact, the experience remains consistent with how it has traditionally been prepared and served. The body can actually receive the full range of its compounds, and the energetic quality of the medicine is preserved.
Commercial chocolate, on the other hand, is often heavily processed (roasted at high temperatures or alkalized) which can strip away much of what makes cacao medicinal in the first place.
This distinction matters.
Because when we say cacao is medicine, we are not talking about a candy bar. We are talking about a preparation that still carries its original composition, and therefore its full capacity to support the body and the heart.
How We Hold Cacao at Conscious Ceremonies
At Conscious Ceremonies, cacao is not an accessory.
She is not there to create an aesthetic moment or fill space in a timeline. She is introduced intentionally, and only when in right relationship with the people and the container we are holding, she can do incredible things.
We work exclusively with ceremonial-grade cacao, sourced through trusted vendors who maintain direct relationships with Indigenous growers and prioritize ethical, sustainable practices.
When cacao is served, it is done with care:
The space is prepared, not just physically, but energetically
The intention and ingredients are clean and clear
The pacing allows people to actually feel what is happening, rather than move past it
In union ceremonies, cacao can become a point of connection… a shared experience that invites presence, softens the room, and brings people into the moment together. Not as performance, but as whole-body felt participation.
Is it subtle? Yes. But it is also deeply effective when held well.
What We’ve Witnessed in Ceremony
There’s a difference between understanding cacao… and watching what it actually does in a room.
We’ve had the honor of sitting with and serving Mama Cacao in ceremonies across Las Vegas, Texas, and Chicago, both in intimate circles and within larger ceremonial spaces. Each time, the experience is slightly different, but there’s a pattern that’s hard to ignore. The room softens and people arrive more fully. There’s less guarding, less performing… more presence.
One moment that stays with us happened during a matrimony ceremony where cacao was shared with everyone present.
We prepared it in a way that allowed all ages to partake (a version for the adults, and a version for the children) so the experience wasn’t limited or exclusive. It became something communal and an experience shared across generations.
And everyone in the space could feel it.
Not in a loud or overwhelming way, but in the way conversations opened up, in the way people lingered a little longer with one another, and in the way affection became easier to express.
The bride’s mother, in particular, moved through the evening in a way that was beautiful to witness. She carried that openness with her throughout the night, telling her children and grandchildren how much she loved them, over and over again, without hesitation.
Before leaving, she asked to take some cacao home, because she wanted to bring that same feeling into her next family gathering; not recreate the ceremony, but continue the connection.
That’s the part that matters.
Cacao doesn’t create something that isn’t already there; it helps people access what already exists beneath the surface, and gives it somewhere to go.
When it’s held with care, it becomes less about the drink itself, and more about what it makes possible between people.
In our own understanding, medicine has never been separate from relationship. It lives in how something is prepared, how it’s shared, and how it continues beyond the moment itself.
A Note on Reciprocity
Cacao has traveled far to reach many of us.
To work with it ethically means acknowledging that, and acting accordingly.
That looks like sourcing responsibly, paying attention to who is being supported, and giving thanks…not as a gesture, but as a daily practice.
Gratitude to the plant itself.
Gratitude to the Earth that grew it.
Gratitude to the hands that cultivated, harvested, and prepared it.
Gratitude to the lineages that have protected its use as medicine.
Without them, this work would not exist.
What’s Coming Next
This relationship is something we are continuing to deepen.
Toward the end of this year, we will be introducing our Conscious Elixir Bar: a space where cacao, along with other plant allies, will be prepared and served with the same level of intention we bring into all our ceremonies.
A space you can step into, slow down within, and actually feel.
Not just something to consume…but something to experience, and carry with you.
More to come soon.
If This Resonates
If you’re feeling drawn to work with cacao in a more intentional way, we’d be honored to hold that with you.
Whether you’re envisioning a cacao circle, looking to incorporate cacao into an upcoming ceremony, or simply wanting to explore what this could look like for your space or community… you’re welcome to reach out.
👉You can book a call with us here
We’ll meet you there with care, clarity, and intention. 🤲🏽
With Gratitude
With deep respect for the plants, the people who carry the medicine, and the spaces that allow it to be shared…always in right relationship,
Katie
